Jorge Cavelier
Painter & Sculptor
Jorge Cavelier is a Colombian-born painter and sculptor whose practice spans five decades of international exhibition. Born in Bogotá in December 1953, he trained in architecture, painting, and fine arts across Colombia, New York, and Florence — earning his fine arts degree from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze in 1982.
Biography
His formation moved between continents: architecture at Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, painting at New York University and the National University of Colombia, anatomy and nude drawing at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, where he ultimately completed his degree in painting. In 1983 he founded "Trazo", an art studio and information centre in Bogotá, where he also taught painting. His sculptural practice deepened in 1992 through studies with Master Tino Petronzio of the Institut de Beaux Arts de Montréal.
Over four decades of solo exhibitions — from Bogotá and Miami to New York, Madrid, Milan, Barcelona, and Lisbon — Cavelier has developed a body of work that moves fluidly between oils, watercolors, silverpoints, paintings on silk, and sculpture in aluminium, granite, plexiglass, and bronze. His work has been presented at the Biennale di Venezia (2019), Art Basel Miami Beach, Pinta Miami, WOPART Lugano, and the Grand Palais in Paris, among many others.
Works by Cavelier are held in the permanent collections of El Museo del Barrio in New York, the Banco de la República in Bogotá, the Colección Fortabat in Buenos Aires, and the Collection Ortiz Gurdián in Managua and Miami. His paintings have appeared at Sotheby's New York, Casa de Subastas Durán in Madrid, and Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas.
Commissions
Jorge Cavelier accepts a limited number of commissions each year — paintings and sculptures created in close dialogue with the collector. Each commission begins with a conversation about space, intention, and the life the work will enter.
